The St. Louis Astronomical Society (SLAS) is devoted to the interest and advancement of the science of astronomy. Our mission is to promote that interest and encourage people of any age to look up at night, and learn about amateur astronomy.
To that end, we provide access to the night sky to thousands of people every year through our public and private outreach events. Check our event calendar to find an upcoming public event. We have a regular schedule of public events at a variety of parks around the metro area. We also host free monthly meetings at Washington University. Our general meetings are free and open to the public, and feature a guest speaker who is typically a professional researcher in Astronomy or an Astronomy-related field. A social hour with refreshments follows the meetings. These meetings and refreshments provide an opportunity for visitors and those with questions about amateur astronomy to talk informally with our members.
Our society consists of over 150 members, and we are governed by an Executive Council which operates under the society's Constitution and by-laws. This council (or "The Board" as we call them) has established a number of committees to support the society's operations.
