Dark Sky Locations

A frequent question is where can go to find really dark skies?

If you live near St. Louis this is a real challenge. Most experienced observers use state or local parks and conservations areas. Here are some links and tips on how to find such locations. Once you find an area you like, identify the authority responsible, contact them and make sure you have approval. While most state facilities have sundown or after dark restrictions, most state park rangers are very understanding and even encouraging. Always be courteous and don't assume you have a right to be there without proper permission.

  • Danville Conservation Area

    Danville Conservation Area is in Montgomery County, southeast of the community of Danville on Route RB. Mostly wooded, this 3,136 acre area features numerous narrow ridges. For more information call: 573-815-7900

  • Dr. Edmund A. Babler Memorial State Park
    Hits: 9367

    Near St. Louis. SLAS holds telescope viewing sessions at Babler every year. Visit the SLAS Event Calendar for upcoming viewing sessions. Camping is available and viewing can be done in those areas. With permission from the park office you might be able to observe from the open filed near the monument.

  • Missouri Department of Conservation

    This agency is responsible for all conservation areas.

  • St. Charles - Brommelsiek Park
    Hits: 5269

    Almost 500 acres of multi-use trails; Off-Leash Dog Area; fishing lakes; picnic shelters; and Astronomy Viewing Area located on Schwede Rd south of O'Fallon, MO. Broemmelsiek Park offers first class astronomy viewing area with 10 concrete viewing stations equipped with electrical service to accommodate the latest telescopes. The site is open on a first-come, first-served basis and serves as the primary location for fun weekly stargazing opportunities.

  • Washington State Park

    Perhaps best known for the largest group of petroglyphs yet discovered in Missouri. Camping is available and viewing can be done in those areas. With permission from the park office you might be able to observe from the petrogyph parking lot. Contact the park office at 636-586-5768 for additional information

  • William G. and Erma Parke White Memorial Wildlife Area

    Located 14 miles north of Troy, MO. The area contains 315 acres of timber and 495 acres of open fields. There are 2 good open areas for observing. For more information call: 636-441-4554

The St. Louis Astronomical Society (SLAS) is a 501(c)(3) non-profit established in 1936.  SLAS is devoted to the interest and advancement of the science of astronomy.  With over 200 members, SLAS is the largest astronomical society in the metro St. Louis area.
